The "nat" (or spirits) that protect the temple. They depict a father/son team who were architects of the temple. The son (smaller) is held in higher regard by worshippers, hence his placement.

One of the most important temples in Bagan and the prototype for all Burmese stupas. It was here at Shwezigon where Nat (spirit) worship was first allowed to combine with Buddhism.
